In this post, we’ll cover some tips on how to provide first aid for common childhood injuries and illnesses in Australia.
Cuts and scrapes
Clean the wound with water and mild soap, and cover with a sterile dressing or bandage. Apply pressure to stop any bleeding.
Burns and scalds
Hold the affected area under cool running water for at least 20 minutes. If the burn is severe or covers a large area, seek medical attention immediately.
Choking
If your child is choking, encourage them to cough. If the object does not come out, perform back blows and abdominal thrusts as instructed by a first aid manual.
Fever
Give your child plenty of fluids and keep them cool with a cool bath or a fan. If the fever is very high or lasts longer than a few days, seek medical attention.
Allergic reactions
If your child has an allergic reaction, give them any medication that has been prescribed by a doctor, such as an EpiPen. Seek medical attention immediately.
